Media24 The Witness

2020

Media24 newspaper title The Witness which is one of South Africa's oldest newspapers began a conversion to digital production process in 2020. I helped mentor the management and editorial staff in web production and social media strategy.

The project is a medium term process with the newsroom changing part of its process flow to deal with social media and website demands which continuing to produce a hardcopy newspaper.

The Witness readership and audience are not the same people which meant a careful analysis of the existing business models before advising the leadership on possible ways forward when it came to a digital first philosophy.

Government Communications

2017-2018

Hired on contract by the Government Communication and Information Service meant converting the four divisions into a digital friendly environment.

Starting with the Electronic Information Services division, I implemented a real-time philosophy in both production and management. We then distributed the famous SA Government response to U.S. President Donald Trump's attack on South Africa in 2018. The tweet went viral with over 22m impressions eventually.

I also analysed the flow of communication internally in the Products and Platforms Division to harmonise operations.

The third major positive change was working with supply chain management to enable a more effective social media boosting philosophy and briefed South Africa's Treasury team on the cost-savings which were duly implemented.

frayintermedia

2014-2017

The SME based in Johannesburg required an experienced project manager to facilitate delivery of its multimedia services. I ran a division which worked closely with researchers to build visual tools used in presentations for global NGOs including MOTT foundation of Canada, Oxfam and Soul City Institute amongst others.

Managing a team of journalists, photographers and translators across 16 countries took a great deal of logging, organisational and personal management skills. From briefing a network of fixers to finalising print production and video mastering the projects were demanding but fulfilling.

Business Day online & tv

2010-2014

Business Day newspaper and Financial Mail magazine are the two most respected financial brands in South Africa. My role was to convert the combined newsrooms into a digital first operation which took 36 months.  The new combined brand was then launched known as BusinessLive.

The initial project included the launch of new websites, training staff in new systems, mentoring senior staff in changing production flows and building the operations first social media platforms.

Once this had been achieved, I moved to the television arm known at the time as Summit television but changed to Business Day tv or BDtv. As news editor, my role was to work strategically to improve the delivery of business content in real time while retaining the strength of what was a subscription model delivered on global cable channel DStv.
